The insect proof clothing manufactured by The Original Bug Shirt Company is designed to protect against the biting insects so common to North America, the Tropics and most of the rest of the world.

The loose fitting design and specialized materials used in the construction of all our protective clothing, not only prevent mosquito bites, and protect the wearer from black flies, no-see-ums, deer flies, horse flies and ticks, but can also reduce the risk of contracting the diseases these pests can carry, like West Nile Virus and Malaria. We are in the business of not only protecting your skin, but also protecting your health.

While it does not repel mosquitoes, our durable outdoor clothing does provide an effective insect shield; a physical barrier between the wearer and the bugs. And it reduces the need for reliance on chemical repellents. We do not manufacture insect repellent clothing. We do make insect protective clothing. It won't drive them away, but it will prevent them from making a meal out of you!

All this, and our products can also be classified as UV protective clothing, since they act as an effective sunscreen against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

They are cool to wear. The Original Bug Shirt, Gaiters and Hood are designed and made in Canada (where mosquitoes and biting flies are a national menace) with the highest quality protective fabric and workmanship.

Since making the first prototypes in the summer of 1989 - just for our own protection - and then starting the company in 1991 following the urgings of our friends and neighbors, there has been an explosion of similar looking, but inferior, products on the market. The "Elite Edition" Bug Shirt contains all the features of the "Original", in the same fabric and color choices, plus these significant design enhancements:

  • Two sliders in a top of face mesh zipper enabling you to open it just a tiny bit (to look clearly through binoculars, take photos or eat!) without letting the biting insects get to you.
  • Adjusting cord to the back of the hood allows you to effectively pull the hood back off your face if it falls too far forward and blocks your peripheral vision. Using both of these features together allows you the added versatility of wearing the shirt with your face exposed but the rest of you protected.
  • Ribbed cuff in addition too the elastic cord adjusters at the wrist for added comfort and maximum effectiveness at keeping blackflies, no-see-ums and ticks out!
  • Additional patch pocket with a velcro closing flap on the front of the shirt.
  • Modified sleeve shape to wrap your elbow more completely and prevent mosquitoes from attacking at that tender spot.
  • Drawcord lock location at the waist slightly to the left.

  • Constructed of 100% no-see-um mesh.
  • Fits over baseball caps, hard hats, etc.
  • Elastic cord passes under your arms together with a cord lock which holds the Bug Hood firmly in place.
  • Provides protection for your face and neck, from all types of biting flies and mosquitoes. But please don't confuse the degree of protection offered by the Bug Hood, with the exceptional protection offered by both the Original Bug Shirt styles.
